Read full description of the books:
The Store of a Million Items essentially amounts to a striking first story followed by quite a few uneven ones. Cliff, whose writing is a bit like a less interesting Michael Ondaatje (yes, I know that’s reductive), begins to read like poetry about a third of the way through the collection, and I wonder if that’s not what she should be writing instead of fiction.
This short collection might have some beautiful turns of phrase and some interesting ruminations on post-colonial gender politics, but unfortunately, it lacks any sense of pacing or plotting that a good short story collection should have. If you come across it, however, I’d still encourage you to read the rather astonishing first story, “Transactions,” which is really just the exception that proves the rule.
